In order to meet the needs of biological resource protection and popular science education and give full play to the value of biological specimens, the Administration of Shennongjia National Park has launched the construction project of a wildlife specimen museum. On June 11, the reporter saw at the Scientific Research Institute of Shennongjia National Park that technicians were making insect specimens and preparing for the future exhibition in the museum.

Long Shuizhi, a technician from the Scientific Research Institute of Shennongjia National Park, said: "We collected more than 110 butterfly specimens in the wild that day. These specimens are fresh and soft, and we have to be more careful during the preparation process to avoid damaging their wings and antennae."

According to Scientific Research Institute, this specimen museum mainly includes a biological specimen storage, an exhibition hall, and a digital specimen display platform.. Among them, the biological specimen storage covers an area of 178.7 square meters, integrating specimen collection, storage, protection, management and related research work, and will preserve more than 50,000 biological specimens, providing a safe and proper storage environment for biological specimens.

The biological specimen display hall covers an area of 193.32 square meters. It mainly displays specimens of various insects, plants, birds, mammals, etc., introduces the specimen storage, maintenance and digital management process, and displays scientific research results and specimen collection process related to Shennongjia, so as to enhance the display of Shennongjia's biodiversity and the level of popular science education.

The digital specimen display platform uses high-definition images, 3D models, biological AI foundation model and other technologies to present specimens of Shennongjia's rare animals and plants in digital form through five stages: specimen preparation, digitization, information entry, platform construction and docking, and resource sharing, thereby enhancing the public's understanding and utilization of ecological resources and ecological protection knowledge.

At the same time, in order to ensure the smooth construction of the specimen museum, the Administration of Shennongjia National Park, with the goal of "benchmarking against the advanced, strengthening the foundation and improving capabilities", has dispatched technical personnel in batches to Yunnan, Sichuan, Shanxi and other places to exchange and learn advanced management experience, specimen preparation technology and management knowledge from partners such as the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, injecting new vitality into the parks ecological protection and scientific research innovation.

After the completion of the specimen museum, it will meet the specimen storage needs of Shennongjia National Park in the next four years. It is expected to add 16,600 biological specimens and 22,000 digital specimens, realize real-time collaboration between storage and digital platforms, and promote the sharing of specimen resources.
