On March 23, Shennongjia National Park officially launched its most extensive and comprehensive survey into natural resources ever.
Consisting of 15 research topics, including evaluation on ecosystem service and functions, vascular plants, moss resources, mammal resources, bird resources, water resources and aquatic life, and community social economy, the three-year-long project (2023-2025) will include the following protected areas in its survey area: Badong Golden Snub-nosed Monkey Nature Reserve, Xingshan Wanchaoshan Nature Reserve, Zhushan Duheyuan Nature Reserve, Zhuxi Shibali Changxia Nature Reserve adjacent to the pilot area of Shennongjia National Park. The project, which covers an area of 2,370 square kilometers, aims at protecting the ecosystems and habitats of key protected species in Shennongjia, such as golden snub-nosed monkey. Nearly 30 experts and more than 100 researchers from research institutions and universities including Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Forestry, and Wuhan University participated in the investigation.
Compared with the field surveys conducted in Shennongjia National Nature Reserve between 2011 and 2015, this survey is more extensive and comprehensive. In fact, it is the most comprehensive and systematic of all conducted since the implementation of the pilot project of Shennongjia National Park.
After the survey, 15 achievement reports and 8 volumes of books will be released, 1 database and 12 sets of thematic maps established, and more than 30,000 plant specimens, 2,000 vertebrate specimens and 50,000 invertebrate specimens produced. At the same time, the precise protection countermeasures for endangered species will be brought up, the “national park germplasm center” established, the relationship between people and nature improved, and the new model for co-construction, sharing and win-win of ecological protection and community development explored, in order to further enhance the authenticity, integrity and historical and cultural value of the ecosystem in the pan-Shennongjia region, spread the concept of ecological protection, and contribute to the construction of ecological civilization.
