On the morning of May 5, the Shennongding Agency of the Administration of Shennongjia National Park received a call from a guesthouse manager in Liujiawuchang, who reported that a “flying squirrel” had strayed into the guesthouse and requested professional assistance for its safe handling.

The guesthouse manager took immediate action to contact the Agency for assistance upon discovering the wild animal, which reflects the growing awareness of wildlife protection among local residents. Upon receiving the call, staff members from the Shennongding Agency rushed to the scene. The animal was identified as a complex-toothed flying squirrel (Trogopterus xanthipes), a terrestrial wild animal under state protection with important ecological, scientific and social value. It typically inhabits coniferous forests or mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests at altitudes above 1,000 meters, often dwelling in tree hollows and underground burrows, and feeds on plant berries, leaf buds, seeds, and small insects. A thorough examination by professionals revealed that the squirrel had no visible injuries, with stable vital signs and good mental state, meeting the conditions for wild release.
Subsequently, led by Tang Junfeng, Deputy Director of the Administration of Shennongjia National Park, staff members transported the flying squirrel to its native habitat with dense vegetation and abundant food sources, and successfully released it back into the wild. Watching it leap into the forest and return to its natural home brought relief and joy to all present.
This heartwarming rescue is a vivid testament to the Shennongding Agency’s long-term commitment to community outreach and ecological defense. In recent years, the Agency has continuously popularized wildlife protection laws, regulations and scientific knowledge through door-to-door publicity, guesthouse visits, and community science popularization activities, thereby embedding the idea of “protecting wildlife and safeguarding our common home” deeply into public consciousness. Nowadays, it has become increasingly common for local residents to take the initiative to report and participate in wildlife rescues, and a sound atmosphere of public involvement in ecological protection is fostered.
