On December 15, the Xiagu Management and Conservation Center received a call from a part-time ranger, saying that an injured Chinese muntjac was found in the Shacao area under its jurisdiction. The center’s head, together with two colleagues, drove to the scene to rescue the muntjac. It was initially diagnosed after a careful check with paralysis in the hind legs after plummeting off a cliff. The situation was reported to the Shennongding Agency of the Administration in a timely manner. In response, the Agency rapidly coordinated with the Xiaolongtan Wildlife Rescue Station and arranged for the center’s personnel to drive the injured Chinese muntjac to Dajieling, where it was transported by the staff of the Xiaolongtan Wildlife Rescue Station to the rescue station for treatment.
Recent years have witnessed an increasing awareness of wildlife protection among community residents thanks to the regular publicity on wildlife protection by the Xiagu Management and Conservation Center. Wild animals found alone in the area under its jurisdiction due to injuries have been rescued and released into the wild many times.
A terrestrial wild animal of important ecological, scientific and social values, Chinese muntjac is a species protected by China’s laws. Wildlife is an essential part of the natural ecosystem and a resource vital to harmony between humanity and nature. We must, therefore, protect wildlife to ensure the security of the ecological environment and to take care of ourselves.
Shennongjia National Park hereby reminds the public that a prompt notification should be made to the nearest management and conservation center when you encounter cases as mentioned above. In addition, Shennongjia National Park will severely crack down on illegal activities such as hunting state-protected wild animals, picking or digging up state-protected wild plants, as well as acquiring, transporting and selling them in accordance with the law with no tolerance.
