On September 3, during the monitoring of golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) in the wild, field observers discovered an unusual condition in a lactating monkey. The female golden snub-nosed monkey exhibited swelling in her chest, which had a noticeable fluctuating appearance. Additionally, her overall mental state was poor. The monitoring personnel quickly contacted Xiaolongtan Wildlife Rescue Station for treatment.
Upon receiving the rescue call, Xiaolongtan Rescue Station swiftly dispatched rescue personnel to the scene and located the ailing mother monkey. After confirming the need for surgical treatment, the rescue personnel administered anesthesia to the monkey.
The rescue personnel explained that there was a subcutaneous lump measuring 8 to 10 centimeters in the chest of the mother monkey. When pressed by hand, it exhibited a wave-like motion, and the fluid extracted with the syringe was colorless, which indicated subcutaneous edema. After careful examination, no injuries were found in other parts of the female monkey. After the surgical treatment, the lump disappeared. And a comprehensive assessment suggested that the mother monkey could be released back into her original group.
In the follow-up, the monitoring personnel will track and observe the condition of the mother monkey, and feed her separately to ensure her nutrition and prevent the recurrence of edema. (By Zhao Chongnan and Mei Yujiao)
