Basic information of the Project Area
(I) Introduction to the project area. Shennongjia National Park is located in the southwest of Shennongjia Forestry District in the northwest of Hubei Province. It is home to one of the most well-preserved mid-latitude northern subtropical forest ecosystems and complete vertical vegetation spectrum in the world, and is an important part of the flora of Central China, featuring rich species, a wide range of ancient components, complex and diverse geographical components, a large proportion of rare and endemic plants, and well-developed woody plants. According to a recent provincial official report, there are 3386 species of vascular plants in the area, including 88 species of trees belonging to 62 genera in 36 families. There are 681 individual old trees and a total of 636,576 trees in 15 groups of old and valuable trees.
(II) Introduction to the Project. 1. Along the main roads in Shennongjia Forestry District (mainly those in the national park), where transportation is convenient, pilot protection measures will be taken to old trees that require protection and rejuvenation. These measures will be taken step by step, ensuring the normal growth of old and valuable trees through methods such as pruning dead branches, preventing and controlling diseases, decay and pests, and protecting with supports and fences. 2. For representative trees in the old tree clusters with beautiful shapes, or those that are weak in growth and urgently need rejuvenation and protection, individual tree labeling, rejuvenation, pruning, fertilization, management, and guarding will be implemented, gradually optimizing and improving their growth environment.
(III) Introduction to the organizing unit. Based on the approval by China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) titled (NDRC Society [2016] No. 1042), Shennongjia National Park, of which the Administration of Shennongjia National Park is in charge, was put into pilot operation in 2016. The pilot project area covers most of the Hubei Shennongjia Natural World Heritage site and Shennongjia UNESCO Global Geopark, as well as Shennongjia World Biosphere Reserve, Dajiuhu Ramsar site, and the IUCN Green List site. It includes many national-level protected areas such as a national nature reserve, a national geopark, a national wetland park, and a national forest park, as well as a provincial scenic spot and a provincial nature reserve. Covering an area of 1,170 km2, the park very rich in resources and of great importance in terms of biodiversity. It is the most representative region, with the subtropical forest ecosystem known as the “lungs of the earth”, the sphagnum wetland ecosystem known as the “kidneys of the earth”. Rich in biodiversity so that it is known as the “immune system of the earth”, it is the region with the richest endemic plant species in China and a “gathering place” for living fossils and ancient, rare, and unique species in the world. In 2018, a comprehensive survey of old and valuable trees was completed in the entire area by the Administration of Shennongjia National Park and the Forestry Administration Bureau of Shennongjia Forestry District, and an information management system for old and valuable trees was established. During this project, the Administration of Shennongjia National Park is responsible for launching, promotion, organization, coordination, inspection, acceptance, and other duties as specified in the Management Measures for China Green Foundation’s “Internet + Nationwide Voluntary Tree-Planting” Campaign Donation Project.
The Purpose and Significance of the Project
The “Protecting Ancient Trees and Appreciating the Beauty of Nature in Shennongjia National Park” public fundraising project is a voluntary tree planting campaign conducted by the Shennongjia Golden Snub-nosed Monkey Conservation Foundation through the “Internet + Nationwide Voluntary Tree-Planting Campaign” website (http://www.yiwuzhishu.cn/). The project utilizes a nationwide voluntary tree planting online platform and targets citizens who are dedicated to the ecological civilization construction in Hubei Province, as well as local Party branches, government departments, enterprises, institutions, and social organizations in Shennongjia. As an important water source and conservation area, a crucial ecological barrier in central China, and a sensitive ecological area in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, Shennongjia National Park plays a significant role in implementing the concept of “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” and achieving the “dual-carbon” goals. Therefore, it is of great significance for Shennongjia National Park to protect old and valuable trees, which reflect the regional ecological value and help study their continuity.
Project Content
Besides regular protection of old and valuable trees, this public welfare fundraising project aims to raise 6 million yuan in three years. It aims to improve the growth momentum or conditions of old and valuable trees that stand alone or in clusters within the national park by taking protective measures such as rejuvenation, pruning, fertilization, pest control, maintenance, support and fencing.
