Davidia involucrata (Chinese dove tree) is a deciduous tree that typically grows to 15-20m tall, with few can grow up to 25m. Diameter at breast height is about 1m. The bark is dark gray or dark brown, and often splits and falls off in irregular patches. Young branches are cylindrical, current-year branches are purple-green, hairless, and perennial branches are dark brown or dark gray. Winter buds are conical, with 4-5 pairs of ovate scales, often arranged in imbricate structure.
Davidia involucrate, also known as the dove tree, is a national class I protected plant species of China and a world-famous rare plant. It is a Cenozoic plant that appeared 10 million years ago and a relic plant left over from the Tertiary glacial period. Discovered by the French missionary Father Armand David in 1869, it has great research and conservation value.
Davidia involucrate blooms at the end of April and beginning of May. Its flowers have only two white bracts and black stamens in the middle, looking like a dove spreading the wings to fly from a distance, hence the common name dove tree. Being tied to famous mountains, it can be found in Shennongjia, Zhangjiajie, Mount Emei, and Mount Fanjing.
