138 species of national key protected wild animals in 46 families and 25 orders dwell in Shennongjia National Park, which include 22 species of mammals, 98 species of birds, 6 species of amphibians and reptiles, 3 species of fish, and 9 species of insects. Among them, there are 26 Class I protected species, including Golden Snub-nosed Monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellanae), Leopard (Panthera pardus), Forest Musk Deer (Moschus berezovskii), Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and Reeves's Pheasant (Syrmaticus reevesii), etc. 112 species are national Class II protected animals, including Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta tcheliensis), Chinese Serow (Capricornis milneedwardsii), Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), Tufted Deer (Elaphodus cephalophus), Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) and Koklass Pheasant (Pucrasia macrolopha), etc. 62 species are inscribed on the IUCN Red List. Among them, there are 26 vulnerable species, 21 near threatened species, 12 endangered species, and 3 critically endangered species. 98 species of wild animals in this area are included in the CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), including 17 species of vertebrates in Appendix I, 63 species of vertebrates and 5 species of insects in Appendix II, and 13 species in Appendix III.
