The statistics show that more than 600 animals (including the wild animals saved by local residents, volunteers and visitors spontaneously) have been rescued since the establishment of Hubei Shennongjia National Nature Reserve (the Shennongjia National Park was set up later). The animals being rescued cover more than 30 species, including Tufted deer, Accipiter virgatus, Reeves's muntjac, Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, owl, Golden Eagle, macaque, black bear, wild boar, Chinese Goral and Red-and-white Giant Flying Squirrel.
Such animal rescues are often heard in the locality, and all those calling to report are local villagers. "Villagers have a strong awareness of ecological conservation now," Jiang Jun, a staff member of the Xiaolongtan Wildlife Rescue Station, said. Since the Regulations on the Protection of the Shennongjia National Park came into effect, the awareness of the community residents for ecological conservation is strengthened noticeably. They would make phone calls to report whenever they find abnormal wild animals and cooperate actively in the rescue operation. (By Zhang Ran, Jiang Jun)
